Canon have just updated their midrange SLR and added some interesting accessories.
The Canon 80D, out in March, looks like a solid improvement on the popular 70D. It’s clearly being aimed more at video shooters. It has better autofocus and 1080p/60 slow motion, plus HDR and time-lapse movie modes, and there’s a proper headphone jack at last.
The 18-135 kit lens has also been updated, with a quieter, faster ‘nano’ AF system and the option of adding a silent, remotely controllable Power Zoom adapter.
They’ve also announced a directional microphone, the DM-E1, which is switchable between shotgun, 90 degree and 120 degree stereo modes. It looks like serious competition for Rode’s similarly priced mono VideoMic Pro (though the Rode claims better sensitivity and a wider frequency range). The Power Zoom and DM-E1 will be out in June.
