Serena Williams tames Maria Sharapova to win Australian Open 2015, her 19th major overall

Serena Williams maintained her unbeaten record against Maria Sharapova to win Australian Open 2015 in Rod Laver Arena. Top-seed defeated World No. 2 Sharapova to register straight set 6-3, 7-6 (5) win that fetched her sixth Australian Open title and 19th grand slam overall. With this win she also gives her chance in chasing record 22 major won in women’s tennis history by Steffi Graf.


Right from the start to the last point won by Serena Williams, one can be well deducted out of this high-profile clash is – Serena Williams can lose to anybody but not Maria Sharapova. She looked extra motivated; her winning points had more authority and more dominance. Serena extended her winning streak to 17-2 against Sharapova, which is damaging her credentials as one of the greatest player of her generation.


The two players who were just cordial while being photographed at the beginning of the match made it quite clear about their mutual feelings for each other. But it was Serena who translated her off-field rivalry into great constructive game against the Russian player.


In the first set, Serena did not let Sharapova settle and took it easily 6-3 as the latter remained passive. The second set saw more of Sharapova being active in the game but her inability to shake Serena’s determination on her service games cost her title. Sharapova displayed good game of tennis only Serena was far better in every department of the game – from her intent to execution on court.
